AA car keys warning to UK drivers ahead of Christmas

The AA has warned drivers that Christmas Day - and the days after - could be a disaster if they do not follow specific guidance. Whilst the experts can only advise and recommend that you carry out certain tasks, and avoid others, it's wise to keep in mind what they have to say to ensure you are at as little risk as possible. The motoring experts advised drivers to keep their cars empty and their keys out of sight. Discussing 'car crime', the AA emphasised that if your home is broken into and they find your keys, they can escape with your Christmas gifts, other valuables, as well as your car - all with the keys in hand. In their guidance, the experts suggested that to stop this from happening, people should not leave their keys in certain rooms. The experts explained that "thieves will steal phones, wallets and even shopping bags from cars if they think it could be worth something." "If you really have to leave something behind, hide it out of sight in the glove box or boot", it suggested. You should always aim to park in well-lit, security-attended car parks where possible, especially "if you're leaving your car out of sight in a large car park for an extended period of time, for example when parking at a music festival." Just make sure your car is locked at night, and it's in a secure, well-lit location. The AA cautioned that drivers should never "leave keys on display in the hall or where they could be easily reached from the front door." You should also not be "tempted to take keys upstairs with you. Many thieves won't think twice if you stand between them and the keys to the car they want." In a separate section, AA advised: "Instead of a coat pocket, another coat hook is an effective way to keep your keys secure. However, keep the hook out of sight of windows and doors to discourage car thieves from taking them." It also suggested that some companies "have apps that make finding your car key easier. By attaching a Bluetooth tracker โ€“ usually about the size of a supermarket points card โ€“ to your bunch of keys, you can let your phone or tablet do the looking for you."
