NASCAR championship format has been revised for 2026

The NASCAR Chase began with the 2004 season. It marked the first year of a 10-race playoff format to conclude the season. Since then, NASCAR has made several adjustments to the format. Last season, a committee of members from the industry spoke on possible changes to the championship format. Recently, their findings and suggestions were submitted to NASCAR for consideration. Those recommendations:– A larger sample size for a championship– Bolster the importance of each race– Rewarding consistency while maintaining the importance of winningToday, NASCAR has officially launched a new championship format beginning with the 2026 season. The Chase is making a return and it will be a 26-race regular season along with a 10-race playoff.Playoffs rounds are now gone. There will be no eliminations once the The Chase begins. All 16 playoff drivers will battle until the final race of the season. The point leader will go into The Chase with 2,100 points. Second place in the regular season enters with 2,075 points.Race wins will earn more points in 2026. Race winners will now earn 55 points, jumping from 40.Win-and-you’re-in is gone from the playoffs. A win will no longer grant drivers a seat at the championship table. They’ll still need to earn enough points to qualify. “As NASCAR transitions to a revised championship model, the focus is on rewarding driver and team performance each and every race,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR President. “At the same time, we want to honor NASCAR’s storied history and the traditions that have made the sport so special. Our fans are at the heart of everything we do, and this format is designed to honor their passion every single race weekend.”The other divisions will also see a new format. Playoffs will be the final nine races for the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and the final seven races for the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series.Day | Date | Race | Network | TimeSundayFebruary 1Clash at Bowman GrayFOX8:00pm ETThursdayFebruary 12Daytona DuelsFS17:00pm ETSundayFebruary 15Daytona 500FOX2:30pm ETSundayFebruary 22EchoPark SpeedwayFOX3:00pm ETSundayMarch 1Circuit of the AmericasFOX3:30pm ETSundayMarch 8Phoenix RacewayFS13:30pm ETSundayMarch 15Las Vegas Motor SpeedwayFS14:00pm ETSundayMarch 22Darlington RacewayFS13:00pm ETSundayMarch 29Martinsville SpeedwayFS13;30pm ETSundayApril 12Bristol Motor SpeedwayFS13:00pm ETSundayApril 19Kansas SpeedwayFOX2:00pm ETSundayApril 26Talladega SuperspeedwayFOX3:00pm ETSundayMay 3Texas Motor SpeedwayFS13:30pm ETSundayMay 10Watkins Glen InternationalFS13:00pm ETSundayMay 17Dover Motor Speedway(All-Star Race)FS13:00pm ETSundayMay 24Charlotte Motor SpeedwayPrime Video6:00pm ETSundayMay 31Nashville SuperspeedwayPrime Video7:00pm ETSundayJune 7Michigan International SpeedwayPrime Video3:00pm ETSundayJune 14Pocono RacewayPrime Video3:00pm ETSundayJune 21San DiegoPrime Video4:00pm ETSundayJune 28Sonoma RacewayTNT Sports3:30pm ETSundayJuly 5Chicagoland SpeedwayTNT Sports6:00pm ETSundayJuly 12EchoPark SpeedwayTNT Sports7:00pm ETSundayJuly 19North Wilkesboro SpeedwayTNT Sports7:00pm ETSundayJuly 26Indianapolis Motor SpeedwayTNT Sports2:00pm ETSundayAugust 9Iowa SpeedwayUSA3:30pm ETSaturdayAugust 15Richmond RacewayUSA7:00pm ETSundayAugust 23New Hampshire Motor SpeedwayUSA3:00pm ETSaturdayAugust 29Daytona International SpeedwayNBC7:30pm ETSundaySeptember 6Darlington RacewayUSA5:00pm ETSundaySeptember 13World Wide Technology Raceway at GatewayUSA3:00pm ETSaturdaySeptember 19Bristol Motor SpeedwayUSA7:30pm ETSundaySeptember 27Kansas SpeedwayUSA3:00pm ETSundayOctober 4Las Vegas Motor SpeedwayUSA5:30pm ETSundayOctober 11Charlotte RovalUSA3:00pm ETSundayOctober 18Phoenix RacewayUSA3:00pm ETSundayOctober 25Talladega SuperspeedwayNBC2:00pm ETSundayNovember 1Martinsville SpeedwayNBC2:00pm ETSundayNovember 8Homestead-Miami SpeedwayNBC3:00pm ETThis is how the playoffs will begin based on regular season standings:Seed | Points1st2,1002nd2,0753rd2,0654th2,0605th2,0556th2,0507th2,0458th2,0409th2,03510th2,03011th2,02512th2,02013th2,01514th2,01015th2,00516th2,000Mark Martin knocks the NASCAR playoff formatNASCARCategoriesTags
