Toyota’s Boss Just Said “Screw It” And Went Full MAGA Gear

Akio Toyoda's decision to sport a Trump-Vance shirt and a MAGA hat has sparked a lot of debateby Michael Gauthier Toyota’s Chairman ventured into politics and sported MAGA attire in Japan. He wore a Trump-Vance t-shirt as well as a “Make America Great Again” hat. Toyota recently announced plans to invest $10 billion in the United States. Media giants and technology firms have bowed to the Trump administration by settling questionable lawsuits, funding his fancy ballroom, and kissing the ring. Companies aren’t thrilled with this, but many have calculated it’s better than eliciting Trump’s wrath. Of course, many firms try to do this discreetly as they don’t want to be seen as overly political. However, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda apparently didn’t get the memo. Toyoda leads that group, so it comes as little surprise that he would be at the event. However, he showed up wearing a Trump and Vance t-shirt as well as a “Make America Great Again” hat. This stands in sharp contrast to U.S. Ambassador George Glass, who wore a far more subtle black vest and hat. Start your engines! Every national leader wants to protect their own auto industry.” He went on to say, “We are exploring ways to make tariffs a winner for everyone” and “the people we want most to be winners are our customers.” That’s clearly not happening as Toyota and Lexus are raising prices. The 2026 GX recently received a $750 price hike despite not getting any improvements, while the 2026 4Runner has climbed by up to $1,000. Putting pricing aside, people had a lot to say about Toyoda’s attire. One X user said Toyota’s “clearly another car brand who will never see me as a customer.” Another added, “I don’t want any political overtones. Please handle it in a way that it’s not noticeable.” The incident comes shortly after Toyota announced plans to invest an additional $10 billion in the United States. The automaker has been coy on specifics, but has previously said it will bring their total U.S. investment to nearly $60 billion. According to a recent White House statement, Toyota intends to “export its U.S.-made vehicles to Japan and open its distribution platform in Japan to U.S. automakers.” The Trump administration also noted Japan has decided to allow sales of American-made vehicles and “U.S. safety-certified vehicles” without additional testing.
