UK's most popular used car named and it's not a BMW, Audi or Mercedes

For anyone looking to save money, the used car market is a god-send. Perfectly good vehicles can be snapped up at a fraction of the cost – such as one motor dubbed the "UK's best value" option. And now, the most popular vehicle in the sector has been revelaed. Earlier this week the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) released data showing the best selling used car in the UK. The results showed a familiar name at the top of the charts – despite no longer being in production. The winner was theĀ Ford FiestaĀ with 303,090 examples of the popular city car changing hands during 2025. Coming in second behind it was theĀ Vauxhall CorsaĀ with 247,853 exchanges and then theĀ Volkswagen GolfĀ on with 226,082 exchanges. The average price of a used Ford Fiesta varies depending on the model year and type. For the final generation of Ford Fiesta produced between 2017 and 2024, prices can vary between Ā£4,000 and to Ā£15,000. For a long time the Ford Fiesta was one of, if not the best, selling car in the UK before it was discontinued and replaced by the Puma. Now, having dominated the new car market, the Fiesta is dominating the used car market too. SMMT’s data also showed a growth in second hand electric cars with more and more of the vehicles trickling down into the market. In a statement following the release of the data, chief executive of SMMT Mike Hawes said: ā€œA third year of used car sales growth underscores the market’s resilience, with recovering new car demand revitalising choice and affordability – especially for EVs – in the used market. ā€œThe record number of buyers making the switch signals growing confidence in zero and ultra-low emission motoring. Maintaining this momentum, however, and driving the fleet renewal needed to decarbonise our roads at pace, must start with ensuring a strong and sustainable new car market.ā€ The SMMT’s data comes after renowned automotive publication Autocar named a Ā£1,000 car as the best value vehicle in the UK. The publication highlighted the Dacia Sandero as a used car hero, specifically the second generation car produced between 2013 and 2020. Journalist at the publication Alex Wolstenholme concluded: ā€œA new one today will set you back more than Ā£15,000, so bona fide bargain hunters are best served by a tidy second-generation model. ā€œAs cars become ever more expensive and complex, the simple, sensible Mk2 Sandero is a breath of fresh air, with a definite whiff of future classic about it."
